flood warnings are in place in Galashiels and Berwickshire after heavy rain once again battered the Borders.

SEPA have issued the alert for the whole of Galashiels, running up to Bowland, as the Gala Water rose last night.

And the communities of Greenlaw and Allanton are also under threat from the swollen Blackadder Water.

Only last month, two blocked culverts resulted in a flash flood washing out the centre of Galashiels and causing and thousands of pounds worth of damage to businesses on Bank Street.

A SEPA spokesman said: “River levels on the Gala Water have peaked but will remain high during Friday. Further updates will be issued as appropriate.

“Persistent rainfall throughout Thursday has caused river levels to rise on the Blackadder. “Further rain is expected through Thursday night and into Friday morning.

“There is a high risk of flooding of agricultural land adjacent to the Blackadder.”

However, a warning for the Jed Water between Jedburgh and Camptown has been stood down.

The rain is expected to continue today and tomorrow, increasing the likelihood of more Borders waterways flooding.
