At their weekly primestock sale last Wednesday John Swan Ltd had forward and sold 778 hoggs and 326 ewes.

Hogg numbers similar, but substantially up on this time last year. Fleshed hoggs again easily sold, tail end lots harder to cash.

At their weekly primestock sale on Monday John Swan Ltd sold 74 clean cattle, 79 OTM cattle, 1,197 old season hoggs and 908 ewes.

Bullocks (29) averaged 226.8p per kg and sold to 247p (+6.8p on week), heifers (40) averaged 215.8p per kg and sold to 252p (+1.8p on week), five young bulls averaged 161.4p per kg and sold to197p (n/c on the week) and 79 beef type OTM cattle averaged 132.1p per kg and sold to 199p (+4.5p on the week)

Old season SQQ hoggs averaged 207.9p per kg (+8.3p on week) and sold to £102 while ewes averaged £55.38, and sold to £100. Heavy ewes £71.49, light ewes £42.50.

longtown

The Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart PLC had forward 22 prime cattle, six young bulls, 20 over 30 month cattle, 4,425 prime hoggs and 5,367 cast ewes and rams at their weekly sale at Longtown last Thursday.

A small show of prime cattle saw the plainer end sharper on the week with more quality needed. Top price to 222.5p for a Limousin bullock shown by D.J. Garthwaite and Son, Wyseby Hill Cottage and purchased by Border Meats (Butcher), Lockerbie, others to 221.5p again for a Limousin bullock from W.H. and D.A. Gass, Nunscleugh. Heifers sold to 218.5p from W. and W. Faulder, Houghton House.

Bulls again sold to a similar trade and more needed. Black and White bulls sold to 152.5p and 147.5p both from W.A. Clark, Whins Farm.

Cows were a better show for quality and saw trade again good to sell and just as dear as last week. The sale topped at 136.5p for a Limousin cow from J.A. Bousfield and Sons, Low Stokoe.

Another fine show of 4,425 prime hoggs (926 lightweights) were forward to the usual full ringside of buyers, with all classes of hoggs as good a trade as seen all week, best quality export hoggs short of buyers requirements.

A large show of quality heavy hoggs met tremendous demand but more 38-44 kilo hoggs required.

The overall sale average was 197.2p per kilo (SQQ 201.6p per kilo). Top was £125 per head for Texels from Cowcorse with a top per kilo of 261p for Beltex from Ericstane.

A larger show of 5,367 cast ewes and rams were forward to a fuller ring of purchasers with some fresh faces present.

border livestock

Last week Border Livestock Exchange sold 149 prime cattle including 41 cows, 335 store cattle, 972 prime lambs, 341 ewes and 80 breeding sheep.

Prime cattle were a similar trade as the previous week with Aberdeen Angus cross steers and heifers selling to 390p per kg to Well Hung and Tender, Berwick.

Continental cross heifers sold to 390p per kg and £1,825 per head. Cull cows were also a similar price with heavy pure bred Charolais cross cows selling to £1,644 per head.

Prime lambs sold to 430p per kg for Romney and Texel Crosses from Hallrule, Bonchester Bridge; Humbleton, Wooler and Brackenside, Berwick, respectively.

In the store cattle department the firm had one of its busiest weeks. Yearling steers and heifers were constantly selling in excess of £1,000. Stronger types (20 months) sold to £1,365 per head ex farm.
