Kelso sign move after claims it spoiled town centre

A new road sign in the centre of Kelso, which has been criticised for spoiling efforts to refurbish the town’s historic Square, is to be moved.

At this month’s Kelso Community Council meeting, the issue of the sign, which shows the direction from the Square to Selkirk and Floors Castle, was pointed out by local Scottish Borders councillor Simon Mountford.

He told the meeting that the new sign, located just outside Greggs bakers’ shop, where the Horsemarket enters the Square, went against all the efforts being made to declutter the centre of the town.

Kelso provost John Bassett described the sign as a “monstrosity” and fellow community councillor Harry Tomcyzk said it was “extraordinary” that, with all the money being spent to revamp the Square, that someone then erected such a large road sign right in the line of sight as people approached the cobbled Square from Horsemarket.

Mr Bassett added: “It’s been put just where we didn’t want it.”

However, this week Mr Mountford confirmed to The Southern that Scottish Borders Council is to move the sign further back from the Square.

“The sign is to be moved into Horsemarket, but we are still waiting for confirmation as to exactly where it is to go,” he said.

“It’s very important we don’t allow the town centre to get cluttered with signs etc., after millions of pounds have been spent on improving it.”
