Speed limit bid rejected

COUNCILLORS have rejected calls for a 20mph speed limit through Cardrona, despite a well supported petition.

Over 180 residents had appealed to the council to implement a lower speed limit through part of the village, but last week members of the environment and infrastructure committee decided to take no further action.

The meeting heard that, following speed monitoring and a public information event, council officers felt that a lower speed limit was not needed and not universally supported.

The monitoring found the average speed was already only 24mph, and a public consultation event last month only attracted 30 people, with questionnaires revealing a wide range of views on the matter.

Council officers also felt other communities have a greater need for such measures than Cardrona.

Councillor Gordon Edgar, executive member for roads and infrastructure, said: “This was clearly a worthwhile exercise, but considering the existing speeds and the layout of roads in the village, it would be difficult to justify the provision of any additional measures at this time.”

Options including a 20mph zone, a full 20mph limit in the village and advisory signs would have costed upwards of £5,000.
