A constant police presence has been maintained at an address in Melrose where a man died in a caravan fire on Saturday.

Although named locally as David Ogg, the police have so far refused to reveal any details regarding the deceased, or the circumstances of the blaze, with formal identification procedures still underway.

They have also refused to be drawn on whether the fire is being treated as suspicious or not.

The emergency services were called to Tweedmount Road shortly before 10pm, with firefighters in breathing apparatus attacking the flames. However, they were unable to save the man inside.

The ferocity of the blaze left scorch marks on the wall of the garage behind where the caravan stood in the driveway. Councillor Jim Torrance said the town is in shock following the incident.

He added: “It is very sad. I feel sorry for the family and my condolences are with them.”

Following the tragedy specialist fire investigators and police forensic teams examined the scene, with a white tent erected around the burnt-out caravan.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Enquiries into the full circumstances surrounding this fire are ongoing and anyone who can assist police with their investigation is asked to come forward immediately.”
