A Borders MSP has proposed opening a justice centre in Galashiels, should Peebles and Duns sheriff courts close.
Christine Grahame says she already has support from the Scottish Government and Scottish Borders Council.
She said: “If courts are recommended for closure, I have suggested that a local justice centre could be opened in Galashiels, which is central for the whole region and while that is being developed business should be transferred to Selkirk, not Edinburgh.
“I have secured a commitment from the cabinet secretary for this interim measure and have discussed the prospect of a justice centre for Galashiels with Scottish Borders Council chief executive Tracey Logan.
“I understand the council would be in favour of this, subject to a feasibility study on premises.
“I have said previously that I don’t believe it makes sense to close Peebles Sheriff Court and transfer business to Edinburgh.
“I understand if the worst happens and Peebles is closed that solicitors would prefer to continue to work in the Borders.
“I hope it won’t come to that but this is an alternative that could benefit everyone.”
