A 30-YEAR-OLD Innerleithen man has admitted stealing jewellery from his mother to pay for drugs.
David Rychel, of Horsburgh Street, pleaded guilty to the offence, which happened at his mother’s home between August 25 and September 8.
The court was told how his mother had searched the house looking for the jewellery and was reluctant to accept that her son was responsible. But eventually he admitted he had sold her possessions to buy drugs.
Defending Mat Patrick admitted it was a “pretty unpleasant” offence and Rychel was now cut off from his family as his mother felt this was the last straw in relation to his drug use. But he added that his client wanted an opportunity to address his drug problem.
Sheriff Mhairi McTaggart told Rychel: “It really is becoming a desperate situation stealing from your own mum.”
She allowed him to undergo an 18-month Drug Treatment and Testing Order, but warned he faced losing his liberty if he failed to comply with the terms of the order.
