LIBRARY users want a public meeting on whether the service should move to the town’s contact centre.
More than 30 Friends of Selkirk Library attended a meeting with Scottish Borders Council cultural services manager Ian Brown at the Ettrick Terrace facility on Tuesday.
Attendee Sue Cook said: “People want a public meeting. They are concerned the service will be affected.”
She said some favoured the proposed move to the High Street’s municipal buildings because it has better disabled access. Others feared losing books in the move because the contact centre is smaller.
People voiced fears that children’s “Rhyme Time” and arts and crafts sessions will be lost, and that the reading group could no longer hold its monthly meeting on a Monday evening if the library moved. And there were concerns about people parking at Sainsbury’s and crossing the busy High Street if it was relocated.
Mr Brown said: “The purpose of the meeting was to explain the rationale and impact of the council’s proposals, answer questions and to receive feedback.
“The Friends have strong views about what they see is a diminution of service. The concerns have been recorded in the report going to the full council meeting on Thursday, December 15.”
