WE’VE ALWAYS known Borderers are lucky. And so it proved again when kind-hearted locals scooped all three prizes in a recent charity draw.

RSABI, which helps people who have made their living from the land, had a membership prize draw seeking support at shows and events around Scotland in the run-up to its AGM in November.

Of the 40 names which went into the draw, Rob Shanks’ of Queenscairn, Stichill, near Kelso, came out first, gaining him a lawnmower from local company Thomas Sherriff and Co.

Hawick’s John Tullie of Bowanhill came second, winning a Border Fine Arts figure donated by East of Scotland Farmers and Melrose’s Nina Clancy of Eildon Mains, pulled out third, won the Craigies Farm Deli hamper.

The charity is urging people who do not need their winter fuel allowance to donate it so someone who does.

RSABI chief executive Maurice Hankey said: “If you receive the allowance, but do not really need it to keep yourself warm, please consider donating it to RSABI so that we can pass it on to someone for whom it really would make a difference. We guarantee that every donation received will go straight out this winter to someone from the land-based sector, in need of a warmer home.

“On the other hand, if you are someone in need of help to keep yourself warm, please do contact RSABI to see if we can be of assistance.”

To contact RSABI please visit www.rsabi.org.uk, write to RSABI, The Rural Centre, West Mains of Ingliston, Newbridge, Midlothian, EH28 8LT or call 0131 472 4166 (after January 4).
