Latest figures released by national tourism body, Visit Scotland, shows Easter proved a bumper weekend for visitors to the Borders.

Footfall through the Visit Scotland Information Centres in the region - based in Hawick, Jedburgh, Eyemouth Museum, Selkirk Museum, Kelso, Melrose and Peebles - saw an overall 15% increase from Good Friday to Easter Monday, compared to last year’s Easter break.

In total, 22,00 visitors set foot in the region’s Information Centres, with Peebles Information Centre topping the list by welcoming 475 visitors through its doors this Easter, up 28% on last year.

Paula McDonald, Regional Director for VisitScotland, told us: “The great Easter visitor numbers have provided a real boost to tourism in the Borders and I’m delighted that so many of our local tourism attractions and businesses had such a busy time.

“Our Visitor Information Centres across the region performed extremely well; they each have a dedicated team of knowledgeable staff who provide both information and inspiration to visitors to the region as well as local people, and they play an integral part in helping the tourism industry here.

“I am sure our region’s tourism industry will continue to work well together to capitalise on the opportunities presented by the major events taking place this year such as the Commonwealth Games, The Ryder Cup and Homecoming Scotland 2014.”
