Getting to grips with Newtown litter

There was a good turnout on Sunday for the annual Newtown clear-up of litter, which had been arranged by community councillors.

Some of those who helped are shown in the photograph, above, but others were too busy working to stop and more than 17 bags of rubbish were collected.

Some helpers from Hawkslee Park were unable to turn up on Sunday, but carried out litter pick-ups a few days before. Scottish Borders Council does what it can to keep the village tidy, but litter is consistently created by a small number of people, including council employees, visitors to the mart, health centre, Co-op store and other businesses in the village.
