At their weekly primestock sale last Wednesday John Swan Ltd had forward and sold 616 hoggs and 269 ewes.

Hogg numbers tightening.

Many inspec types on offer, resulting in greater returns for vendors.

At their weekly primestock sale on Monday John Swan Ltd sold 81 clean cattle, 57 OTM cattle, 2,473 old season lambs and 602 ewes.

Bullocks (38) averaged 213.9p per kg and sold to 244p (-12p on week), heifers (43) averaged 218p per kg and sold to 252p (+2.2p on week), two young bulls averaged 171p per kg and sold to 173 and 51 beef type OTM cattle averaged 139.6p per kg and sold to 203p (+7.5p on the week).

Old season SQQ hoggs averaged 209.4p per kg (+1.5p on week) and sold to £120 and ewes averaged £59.69, and sold to £91.

Heavy ewes £76.83, light ewes £47.98.

longtown

The Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart PLC had forward 22 prime cattle, six young bulls, 20 over 30 month cattle, 4,546 prime hoggs and 4,582 cast ewes and rams at their weekly sale at Longtown last Thursday.

Also held was the Annual Prize Show and Sale of Blackface prime hoggets. The show was ably judged by Mr Andrew Dawson who awarded the Championship to regular consignor J. McTurk, Barlaes, which scaled at 49 kilos and realised £94 to Dunbia Ltd.

The show was kindly sponsored by Agri-Lloyd.

border livestock

Last week Border Livestock Exchange sold 114 prime cattle, 233 store cattle, also 814 prime and cull sheep.

Aberdeen Angus cross heifers from South Farm, Matfen, sold to 390p per kg to Well Hung and Tender, Berwick-upon-Tweed.

Prime cattle trade in general continues to be steady with the exception being handy weight steers and heifers which are keenly sought after.

Prime lambs firmed with the bestselling to 450 per kg for Texel cross and Suffolk cross export weights.

Cull ewes continue to improve with pure Texels selling to £134 from Bowsden Moor, Berwick.

Store cattle sold in good numbers with regular buyers securing their favourite lots with more required to satisfy demands.
