Public meetings are to be held on the proposals for the £40million scheme that will see the construction of the Borders’ first distillery.
It was revealed last week that Scotland rugby legend Finlay Calder is the project manager for the distillery plan, which would use the site of the former Jedforest Hotel, south of Jedburgh, for what has been classed as a major development.
This would include a bottling plant, storage facilities, restaurant and visitor centre, as well as the distillery.
If successful, the scheme will see Edinburgh-based Mossburn Distillers Ltd create up to 50 jobs at the distillery.
The company is the same one behind the proposed new £5million whisky distillery on the Isle of Skye.
News of the planned public meetings to be held in Jedburgh, Glendouglas and Southdean, either later this month or in April, follows a meeting for local stakeholders two weeks ago in Glendouglas Hall.
Details of these latest public meetings are included as part of an official notice, signalling the intention of those behind the proposals to lodge a planning application.
Known as a proposal of application notice, it has been lodged with Scottish Borders Council, and lists the name of the applicant as Jedforest D.V.
The address for the applicant is recorded as being offices close to Amsterdam’s Schipol Airport, with Mr Calder given as the official contact.
The agents for the project are Edinburgh architects Simpson and Brown.
Last week, local MSP John Lamont welcomed the news, saying it would represent a “simply phenomenal” investment in the Borders, and show that the region is still an attractive place for large companies to put money into.
