A new housing service for older people has been introduced by the council and Trust Housing Association (THA) at Cornmill Court in Galashiels.
Housing with Care enables tenants to live in self-contained flats with the added benefit of having staff on hand to provide support as required.
The service expands on what was previously offered in sheltered housing by employing carers based on-site to provide personal care and support as tenants require it.
This enables tenants to remain in their own homes for longer than was previously possible.
Councillor Frances Renton, executive member for social work and housing, said: “This is an extremely welcome addition to the range of housing options available for older people in the Borders.”
Jenny Wallace, supported housing manager for THA, said: “We know that this type of service really can help to improve the health and well being of a tenant.
“It gives them continuity and flexibility of care and with the care being provided to them in their own homes and with on site staff seven days a week, family members have peace of mind, too, that their loved one is being looked after.”
Cornmill Court contains 38 flats, each with its own kitchen, living room, bedroom and bathroom. It also has a shared dining room with a meals service for tenants who wish to dine in a communal setting.
Jean Dickson has lived in Cornmill Court for the past four years. She said: “This is a lovely place to live; I couldn’t be happier. It’s my home and I have everything I need – bedroom, sitting room, kitchen and walk-in bathroom – all with access for my wheelchair.
“The staff seem to really enjoy working here which I think makes all the difference.”
The service is likely to be rolled out in other schemes over the next year.
