FIVE self-contained holiday apartments are planned for a plot of land next to a hotel in Lauder.

Wilson McKay, owner of the Lauderdale Hotel, has applied for planning permission to erect the single building adjacent to the existing hotel, which would provide holiday accommodation only.

The application has been lodged with Scottish Borders Council by agents Practical Intelligence.

In a design statement submitted with the plans it states: “It could be argued that with a sound legal agreement the apartments could be sold to private owners, but this will not be the case as the need for apartments of this kind has been identified by the owners of the hotel further to requests and suggestions from their guests and the increasing needs, proactivity and effectiveness of the tourism industry in the Scottish Borders.”

It goes on: “The new apartments will exploit the open nature of the site and in doing so the building design will reflect the individualistic character of buildings in the burgh.

“Local traditional materials are used in this context but in a contemporary manner, retaining the original character and atmosphere of the original hotel.”
