Local MP Michael Moore plans revisiting railway sites on the A7 to see new measures being introduced to clean construction lorries.

Last week The Southern reported road safety fears along the Fountainhall stretch of the route, due to the vehicles being used to clean mud left along the road by rail project vehicles also washing away salt spread by Scottish Borders Council gritters.

The MP was briefed last week on A7 road conditions by Network Rail director, Hugh Wark, following a series of complaints about the impact of railway construction traffic on the road.

Mr Moore asked for the briefing having heard concerns from many road users worried about road safety due to mud on the A7.

Mr Wark explained that new lorry cleaning procedures will be introduced at the main construction sites to reduce the extent of mud on the road. And he also underlined that links between Network Rail, the contractors BAM and SBC will be closer and that road safety priorities will be paramount.

Mr Moore commented: “I welcome Network Rail’s commitment to clean up the lorries and reduce the mud on the road.

“It is understandable that people are alarmed, given the winter conditions.

“Sorting the situation is important. I will have a further chance to discuss the situation when I visit the sites again in the very near future.”
