A Jedburgh man who assaulted his partner has been sentenced to a six-month community payback order, with 70 hours of unpaid work.

Mark Jackson, 25, of Bountrees, appeared from custody and admitted behaving in a threatening or abusive manner, and assaulting his partner at their home on November 15/16.

The court heard how Jackson launched into a “volley of verbal abuse” when his partner asked him to curtail his drinking.

“He became further enraged at her asking him to stop drinking and pushed his face into hers, pushing her against the living room window,” explained prosecutor Tessa Bradley.

The woman managed to release his grip and shout for help. She dialled 999 and, while the operator kept her on the line, Jackson could be heard shouting expletives in the background.

Police described Jackson’s attitude towards his partner as “extremely belligerent”.

Defence solicitor Ed Hulme said his client had been drinking and made no excuse for his actions.

“They had an argument which got completely out of hand. His partner is in court today and wants to resume the relationship,” added Mr Hulme.
