The final list of candidates for the Tweeddale West by-election has been unveiled.

The UK Independence Party announced West Linton hypnotherapist Mars Goodman as its choice before the Monday deadline, while Scottish Labour went for Veronica McTernan from Peebles.

And the final candidate is independent David Cox of Innerleithen.

Mrs Goodman has lived in the ward since 1981 and ran a number of small businesses before retiring to study and qualify in hypnotherapy.

A spokesman for UKIP said: “The Scottish Borders depends largely on a sound road network and we don’t have an alternative in this ward.

“The lack of a second bridge over the Tweed in Peebles causes the High Street to carry all traffic heading south over the only available bridge. The many new developments which the council has allowed south of the river put undue pressure on an already fragile route.”

In total, seven candidates will contest the seat in the October 10 by-election.

The remaining four are Keith Cockburn (Conservatives), Nancy Norman (Lib Dems), David Pye (Borders Party) and Dr Morag Kerr (SNP).
