A KELSO teenager has raised more than £2,500 by trekking part of the Great Wall of China in aid of the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

Becky Thomson, a second-year geography student at Edinburgh University, walked for a week along some of the remote parts of the wall.

Becky, 19, said: “It was very challenging, especially in the heat, however it was so rewarding when I finished and will be something I never forget.

“I’d like to thank all family, friends and local businesses that sponsored me.”

The trek was led by a fellow student on Becky’s course, and was organised by Student Adventures.

Becky said: “It was a lot steeper than I thought it was going to be and the bits we were walking through were mainly parts that have not been renovated, so it was in the jungle in places and quite narrow.

“The scenery was amazing, especially the untouched parts.”

She added: “The heat was the biggest problem – it reached 39 degrees one day.

“That was really hard going, and you can’t really train for that in Scotland!”

After the trek Becky also got the chance to explore Beijing and Shanghai.
