Police in the Borders will tomorrow carry out a day of targeted action to enforce the use of seatbelts as part of an ongoing national campaign.

Road policing officers will be monitoring a number of routes throughout the region on as part of Police Scotland’s commitment to keeping people safe on the road.

It is estimated that one in three people killed as a result of their vehicle being involved in a collision were not wearing a seat belt and that half of those people could have been saved if they had worn one.

Since April 1, more than 18,000 people have been stopped for not wearing a seatbelt or failing to properly restrain a child within their vehicle.

Anyone found to be committing a seatbelt offence will be issued with a £100 fixed penalty ticket.

Inspector Richard Latto from the Lothians and Scottish Borders Road Policing Unit said: “Wearing a seat belt saves lives and for those who choose not to, they run the risk of being seriously injured or killed.

“Our local campaign takes place on Wednesday, however our commitment to enforcing safe motoring practises continues every day.

“Anyone who opts to ignore the law and our safety advice can expect to be stopped and dealt with accordingly by police.”
