New Stichill houses at centre of drains row

Eildon Housing has pledged to work with Scottish Water, contractors and residents to rectify a drainage problem in Stichill.

It was earlier this summer that Scottish housing minister Margaret Burgess officially opened the new affordable eight-house development in the village.

But recent heavy rains have seen the drainage system unable to cope, with water flowing down the access road.

One resident has even complained to Scottish Water, Eildon Housing and the local authority, about finding sewage in her garden after heavy rain.

The woman told us: “It happens when there is heavy rainfall. There’s obviously not enough capacity in the system. Even manhole covers are getting lifted by the water.”

Asked to comment, Scottish Water said the developers of housing schemes are responsible for ensuring suitable waste water systems or connections are put in place before adoption by Scottish Water.

“We have inspected this location and the network is not to adoptable standard,” said a spokesman. “The development has connected into the surface water system which connects to the inlet of the public septic tank.

“For it be adopted by Scottish Water, the developer needs to arrange for the surface water pipe to bypass the actual septic tank and connect with its outlet, relieving the pressure on the septic tank.”

In response to a query regarding the drainage and sewerage at the new development in the village’s Ednam Road, Eildon Housing chief executive, Nile Istephan, told The Southern this week: “We believe the drainage and sewerage systems for the new properties have been built in accordance with the requirements placed on us.

“If problems occur, we are happy to work with the
community and the relevant agencies to resolve these
where they relate to the new homes.”
