JOCKEY Ryan Mania has lent his support to the local Suicide Prevention Week campaign, which starts on Monday.

Mr Mania said: “This is an issue we all need to take more responsibility for by looking out for the people around us.

“The signs might not be as obvious as you think, which is why reading between the lines is important, especially if you know someone is under extra pressure.

Never be afraid to ask someone how they are feeling. It can seem daunting but remember you don’t need to have the answer to all their problems. It’s about being there for them and letting them know you care. You might be the one person who makes the difference.”

During the week there will be a free screening of ‘About a Boy’ at Heart of Hawick, to be opened by Ryan Mania, and the annual Hopeful Steps walk and bike ride. For details call 01835 825970.

Last week The Southern reported that 23 people took their own lives locally in 2012.
