Veterinary surgeon Dr Morag Kerr has been named by the Scottish National Party as their candidate for the by-election to fill the vacant Tweeddale West seat on the council, writes Bob Burgess.

The election was created by the resignation in July of Conservative councillor Nathaniel Buckingham.

Nominations close at 4pm on Monday and so far it looks like being a four-corner affair.

Keith Cockburn defends the seat for the Tories; Nancy Normal flies the Lib Dem flag; while David Pye is the Borders Party hopeful.

Dr Kerr, who lives in West Linton, works in farm animal diagnostics disease control, having previously taught students and managed a laboratory.

She is the daughter of a church minister and sings in her church choir.

She commented: “The SNP-led council have shown their commitment to helping people in their daily lives by freezing the Council Tax and bringing local government much closer to the people with the introduction of local area forums.”

Dr Kerr says she welcomes development within the ward, but says future development must be matched by improved infrastructure.

The seat returns three councillors and the winner will join Willie Archibald (SNP) and Catriona Bhatia (Lib Dem).
