Tributes have poured in for the Duns pensioner who died on Monday after he was attacked by cows with calves near Greenlaw last weekend.
Formerly of Longformacus, Richard Nicholson, 78, was severely injured when he walked his Labrador, Luke, near Marchmont House last Sunday.
He passed away at Borders General Hospital on Monday morning.
Mr Nicholson’s son Robert said: “Dad was well known and well liked within the local community, and he will be sadly missed by all his family and friends.”
A former neighbour and friend said: “Richard’s many friends and neighbours in Longformacus are deeply saddened by his unexpected and far-too early death.
“He’s well-remembered here as a charming gentleman, great sportsman and a true countryman who was actively involved in a host of community activities.”
Another, former, villager said: “He was a character, he was a lovely man, he was just Richard.”
Father-of-three, Mr Nicholson – he had two sons and a daughter – had run the village post office for a number of years from 2001 and was an ex-Longformacus hall committee member.
The regular church-goer had latterly moved to Duns.
Police say there are no suspicious circumstances and a report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.
