Peebles Show draws record poultry field

There was a record number of entries in the poultry classes at this month’s Peebles Agricultural Show.

Organised by Peebles Poultry Club, the show’s poultry competition attracted exhibitors from far and wide.

The show, which is a regional championship show run under Poultry Club of Great Britain rules, was sponsored for an unprecedented third time by local Carnwath agricultural engineers, GH Engineering.

The firm’s Julie Henderson was on hand to congratulate the winners.

A total field of 65 exhibitors brought forward 322 caged entries, plus 134 plates of eggs and 19 poultry photographs.

Show champion was the Dutch bantam from David Taylor,of Hurlston, with the reserve slot going to L & R Wight, of Carnwath, with their juvenile Belgian.

Best results from a local exhibitor was William McLaughlin, of Greenlaw, who took top spot in the soft feather light breed bantam classes with a Silkie.

Winners – Best true bantam, David A Taylor, Hurlston (Dutch); best hard feather bantam, Gordon Alexander, Walston, Carnwath (Modern Game); best trio, David A Taylor, Hurlston (Dutch); best juvenile, L & R Wight, Walston, Carnwath (Belgian); best rare breed, Eddie Glass, Eddleston (Sumatra); best eggs, Mrs A Taylor, Longtown (Three Large Dark Brown).

Non PCGB Awards –Best large soft feather heavy, D & P Fontana, Kailzie (Large Brahma); best large soft feather light, C. Booth, Co Durham (Large Araucana); best utility, Adele Stanley, Lesmahagow (Gold - Top).
