A PEER support group for survivors of childhood sexual abuse is being developed in the Borders.

The service is being provided by In Care Survivors Service Scotland (ICSSS), a support service for adults who suffered childhood abuse in care, or were abused and have a history of care placements.

Mandy Gaze, the local development worker for ICSSS, said: “Currently a peer support group is being developed in line with survivors’ needs, encouraging mutual support and trust among those who, despite their very individual circumstances and experiences, understand the psychological and emotional impact of one another’s experiences and will aim to provide a safe and confidential space when it opens.”

She added: “There’s always a possibility of a journey towards healing trauma that’s wonderful to see.”

Mandy added: “Child abuse has been in the headlines like never before. The Jimmy Savile case and other cases have opened up a new awareness and debate surrounding the entire issue. Having the spotlight shone on it has also highlighted a desperate need for services which help those affected by these traumas.”
