A golden wedding is a special occasion for any married couple – but it was a little more than just special for Ogilvie and Flora Dickson, writes Bert Houston.

For with them at a celebration to mark the anniversary were Ogilvie’s best man and Flora’s three bridesmaids from their wedding in 1963.

Ogilvie, of Huntly Avenue, Melrose, said: “It was simply wonderful to have all the wedding party together again after all that time. I’m sure it’s something that not many couples manage to achieve.”

Best man at that wedding at Trinity Church in Rothesay 50 years ago was the groom’s brother, James Dickson of Galashiels, while the bridesmaids were Betty Young (Galston, Ayrshire), Jean Black (Largs) and Jacqueline Williamson (Isle of Bute).

The anniversary celebration in Melrose was brought forward a couple of months so that the couple’s son, from Abu Dhabi, and daughter, from Cheshire, along with guests from as far away as Australia, could attend.

Also among the guests were National Service comrades who served with Ogilvie in the King’s Own Scottish Borderers during the Malayan conflict in the mid-1950s.
