ST BOSWELLS

AT St Boswells Mart on Monday John Swan Ltd sold 119 clean cattle, 88 OTM cattle, 1,723 old season lambs and 617 ewes.

Bullocks (52) averaged 202.3p per kg (+6.3p on the week). Heifers (66) averaged 202.3p per kg (+4.3p on the week). One young bull averaged 168p per kg (n/c on the week). The 82 beef type OTM cattle averaged 150.7p per kg (+14.7p on the week) and six dairy type OTM cattle averaged 109.4p per kg (n/c on the week).

The 1,723 old season lambs averaged 203.8p per kg (-8.1p on the week) including; 496 38-41kgs averaging 213.6p. The 617 ewes averaged £79.91 (-£8.10 on the week).

AT their weekly Primestock Sale held at Wooler last Wednesday John Swan Ltd had forward and sold 599 hoggs and 335 ewes.

BORDER LIVESTOCK

DURING the week ending February 3, Border Livestock Exchange Ltd sold 128 prime cattle including 61 cast cows and bulls, 1,141 prime lambs including 189 cast ewes and 106 store and breeding cattle.

Cresswell Farms, Belford, topped the prime cattle section selling to 370p per kg for organic home bred Hereford cross steers and heifers. Continental cross steers sold to 353p per kg twice from both Butchercote, St Boswells and Lochside Farm, Yetholm. Limousin cross heifers from Goswick Farm, Beal, sold to 340p per kg. Dairy cattle; Veal calves to 300p per kg flat rate. Young bulls from Haughhead, Wooler, and Middle Moor, Alnwick, to 325p per kg. Best quality dairy cast cows to 270p per kg (£1,104) Lemington, Cockburnspath, with heifers to 310p per kg from the same dairy farm. Other cow prices:- Suckler bred to 285p per kg Upper Samieston, Jedburgh, and Bowsden Moor, Berwick.

Prime lambs firmed as demand increased and numbers tighten. Top prices:- Organics to 490p per kg Tullochallum, Keith and 470p per kg Upper Chatto, Hownam, Kelso. 450p per kg North Doddington, Wooler; Carlopshill, West Linton and Hallrule, Bonchester Bridge, Hawick.

Store cattle continue to firm with records being broken for on farm sales every week. Top prices:- Charolais cross steers 18 months old to £1,100 for 20. Limousin cross heifers to 230p per kg. Aberdeen Angus bulls to £5,000.
