Work to take place on historic Galashiels clock

The Galashiels War Memorial Clock is to be silenced for two weeks from July 22.

This will allow specialists to conduct jobs such as upgrading the existing motors, carry out the electrification of the bell winding mechanism and introduce electronic controls for the clock, chimes and bell.

The work is predicted to cost £2,000. Stuart Mawson, Scottish Borders Council Property Manager, said: “We expect the work to take about a fortnight to complete. It will result in some temporary disruption to the chimes and clock times but this maintenance will ensure it is operating as smoothly as possible for years to come.”

The local branch of the Royal British Legion has been made aware of the planned maintenance.

The clock was silenced by SBC in July 2008 following a complaint from a local guest house owner stating that the bells were keeping local residents up at night.

This provoked members of the community to express their outrage. “This is a ludicrous move by an increasingly ludicrous council which seems to have lost sight of its duty of accountability to the public,” said Mr Tulley, ex-convener of SBC at the time.

A campaign involving the Royal British Legion to lift the bell ban later proved successful.
