AT St Boswells Mart on Monday John Swan Ltd sold 139 clean cattle, 132 OTM cattle, 2,485 old season lambs and 628 ewes. Bullocks (63) averaged 196p per kg (-5.2p on the week). Heifers (71) averaged 198p per kg (-2.0p on the week). Five young bulls averaged 183p per kg (n/c on the week). The 123 beef type OTM cattle averaged 136p per kg (-3.2p on the week) and nine dairy type OTM cattle averaged 120.2p per kg (n/c on the week).
The 2,485 old season lambs averaged 211.9p per kg (+11.1p on the week) including 708 38-41kgs averaging 222.6p, 628 ewes averaged £88.01 (+£8.11 on the week).

AT their first seasonal sale of store cattle at Wooler last Tuesday John Swan Ltd had forward and sold 122 head.
All classes shown sold at extreme rates to a ring packed full of buyers. More cattle could have easily been handled. Fortnightly sales will take place throughout the season.

BORDER LIVESTOCK
DURING the week ending Friday, January 27, Border Livestock Exchange Ltd sold 152 prime cattle including 45 cast cows and bulls, 1,409 prime lambs including 148 cast ewes and 119 store cattle.
Organic lambs sold to £5 per kg.
Prime cattle prices edged up as supplies remain tight. Aberdeen Angus cross steers from Howden, Jedburgh, sold to 354p and £1,382. British Angus steers from West Kyloe, Berwick, to £1,497 and 345p, also 349p Fenwick Steads, Belford; 345p Ross Farm, Belford, and 340p Murton, Berwick. Continental steers to 345p Upper Samieston, Jedburgh; 336p and £1,436 West Kyloe. Belgian Blue young bulls from Sharplaw Farms, Hownam, Kelso, sold to 335p per kg and £1,496 per head. Quality dairy bred young bulls from Lilburn Hill, Wooler, to 320p per kg and £965 per head. OTM heifers from Bowsden Moor, Berwick, reached 330p per kg. All other classes of OTM cattle sold exceptionally well with Limousin crosses from Whitmuirhaugh, Kelso, selling to £1,348. Simmental and Stabiliser crosses sold to £1,175 from Easington Grange, Belford. Dairy veal calves to 300p per kg flat rate Baldersbury Hill, Berwick. Good competition and more required.
Lamb trade also moved forward with organic types still making the top prices. Texel crosses from Tullochallum, Keith, to £102.90 and £5.00 per kg. Export weights from Stagehall, Stow, sold to 460p per kg and £96.60 as did Suffolk X from Hardenpeel, Jedbugh. Texel X from Roddam Estates to 450p and £94.50 also from Thorneydykes, and The Hardens, Duns. Romney crosses to 450p per kg from Humbleton, Wooler.
Store cattle are extremely dear and easy to sell. Record prices for on farm sales were achieved with a batch of Blonde heifers from Cairndinnis, Haddington, selling to £1,150; and a batch of 50 Stabiliser heifers sold at £880 from Marleyknowe, Wooler. Simmental in calf heifers sold to £1,650.
