THE Royal Mail has denied allegations that there was no local consultation over its decision where to site a new red postbox in Newtown St Boswells.

Last week, TheSouthern reported on anger in the village over the move by Royal Mail to erect the postbox on a pole on the pavement outside newsagent Eoin Frame’s shop in the centre of the village.

Both Mr Frame and local community council secretary Roger French hit out at what they maintained was a lack of contact between Royal Mail and the village before the work went ahead.

But this week Royal Mail hit back.

Jennifer Bird, external relations manager at Royal Mail Group, told us there was communication between themselves and Scottish Borders Council about the matter.

She said: “The window-mounted postbox in Tweedside Road, Newton St Boswells, is sited on private property and is to be removed at the request of the property owner. Following liaison between Royal Mail and the local authority, and the necessary underground service checks required, a new postbox was resited at Melbourne Place, a distance of approximately 50 yards from the former site.”
