A Borders MSP has proposed a Galashiels justice centre if Peebles and Duns’ courts close.
To save costs, the Scottish Court Service (SCS) plans to keep Selkirk and Jedburgh’s courts open, and transfer Peebles and Duns’ business to Edinburgh and Jedburgh respectively, with a final decision due on Tuesday.
SNP MSP Christine Grahame said: “If courts are recommended for closure, I have suggested that a local justice centre could be opened in Galashiels, which is central for the whole region, and while that is being developed (Peebles) business should be transferred to Selkirk, not Edinburgh.
“I have secured a commitment from the (Scottish Government) cabinet secretary for this interim measure and I understand the council would be in favour of this, subject to a feasibility study on premises.
“I hope it won’t come to that, but this is an alternative that could benefit everyone,” added Ms Grahame.
