Fodder appeal to Borders farmers

BORDERS farmers are being asked to help livestock producers in the west running out of fodder following the bad snow.

The farmers union is asking farmers who have spare feeding to let them know so they can put them in touch with farmers needing supplies.

NFU Scotland chief executive Scott Walker said: “Worries about fodder supplies will be most acute in parts swamped by last week’s snow storms but the long, cold spring has affected the whole of Scotland.

“We will look to build up a picture of where stocks are available and where they are needed and if possible facilitate fodder deliveries.”

Concerns that there could be shortages had been flagged up as early as last autumn following the wet year, with farmers then hoping for an early spring to encourage grass growth allowing them to put their animals out promptly.

Walker said: “That patently has not happened and there is pressure on all livestock enterprises to eke out valuable fodder stocks.“

Anyone with spare fodder should ring 0131 472 4059 or get in touch with regional manager Nina Clancy on 07780441750 or at nina.clancy@nfus.org.uk
