Scottish Borders Council has defended its staff after they logged on to a lingerie and swimsuit website 38,000 times in a year.

Employees browsed the revealing section of the Debenhams site, while clothing rival River Island received almost 230,000 hits from council computers.

Other notable online services used by SBC staff included Twitter (1.05 million), Facebook (633,656), dating provider Meetic (38,878) and Job Seekers (37,715).

A council spokesman said: “SBC has over 5,000 employees and permits limited use of council PCs for internet use at work by staff within a strict framework.

“Our internet policy states that reasonable personal use is permitted and line managers are responsible for ensuring that such use does not interfere with nor detract from an employee’s performance at work or that of colleagues in the surrounding workplace.

“We also use social media extensively to interact with residents and a number
of our staff need to access a wide range of websites
to undertake their roles effectively.”
