The team behind Selkirk’s play park project have asked the town to look after the new children’s facility after they secured £250,000 in funding.

Organisers celebrated the announcement of the
support by the Big Lottery on Tuesday, which means the £335,000 Pringle Park scheme will go ahead.

Work on the project is
expected to begin in June
and it is due to be ready for use by September.

And project vice-chair Margaret Sweetnam hopes the town and park users
will enjoy and respect the new facilities.

She said: “We are going to have to continue funding as any equipment that breaks will have to be replaced at a cost to the project.

“That is why we want to send out the message to the town to respect the park as we are responsible for its upkeep.”

A decision on the Big Lottery application was due in February, with the delay creating anxiety and excitement in Selkirk.

Mrs Sweetnam added: “When I was stepping out of the house, I had people of all ages stopping me in the street to ask if I had heard whether we had been successful.

“The project has had great support from the town and this is more good news for Selkirk.”

The play area bid was launched last year when parents in the
Royal Burgh decided Pringle Park needed new facilities.

Selkirkshire’s councillors agreed to grant a deed of dedication for the next 10 years as the proposed site lies on Common Good land.

The project team then raised more than £11,000, and other supporters are the Landfill Communities Fund (£35,000), Postcode Lottery (£5,000) and Scottish
Borders Council, which helped put together the
lottery bid and contributed more than £24,000 worth of
materials.

The Robertson Trust is expected to provide the final £10,000 this month.

Alison Cullen, chair of Selkirk Play Park Project, added: “By harnessing all that community effort and working together, we have achieved this huge milestone in making the new playpark a reality.

“This is a really proud moment for Selkirk.”
