A £5.5 million elderly care housing development has been opened in Peebles.
Dovecot Court replaced the former Dunwhinny Lodge Care Home and will see Scottish Borders Council (SBC)provide 24-hour care and support for tenants.
Councillor Frances Renton, executive member for social work, said: “I have been looking forward to this moment since I climbed on to a digger to cut the first turf in 2011. It is a wonderful complex, well equipped and designed to meet the needs of our most vulnerable elders.
“Judging by the conversations I have had with tenants it is very popular indeed and we will have to see how we can provide more extra care housing.”
SBC’s director of social work, Andrew Lowe, added: “It is wonderful to see married couples setting up a new home together, and others setting out to the shops for the first time in years.”
Eildon Housing Association built the scheme and chief executive Nile Istephan said the organisation was “immensely proud” of the project.
He added: “A huge amount of work, planning and investment has made this possible, and we have worked closely with colleagues from SBC and the Scottish Government at each step in the process.”
