ONE of the main tourist information centres in the Borders is to undergo a major refurbishment before Easter.

VisitScotland’s Jedburgh centre will be closed from next Monday (March 18) to allow the work to be carried out.

The £70,000 refit will include an internal redesign, new visitor entrance areas and new staff facilities.

Paula McDonald, regional director for VisitScotland, said: “This is fantastic news for Jedburgh, and indeed the Scottish Borders, and we are delighted to be able to continue to deliver a top-quality service for both locals and visitors.

“The information centre refurbishment is due to be completed for Easter and we look forward to continuing to work closely with Scottish Borders Council to bring more visitors to the region.

“As our local, national and international campaigns get under way for this Year of Natural Scotland and indeed Homecoming Scotland 2014, visitors and locals to Jedburgh will be able to take full advantage of the services on offer.”

The new layout of the centre will provide more room for the information racks for leaflets and brochures to help promote local businesses, and new large-scale wall graphics will be installed.

Local and national wall maps will help visitors plan their journey and VisitScotland is also working with Historic Scotland to showcase Jedburgh Abbey within the revamped centre.

During the refurbishment, the information centre will temporarily operate from the visitor centre at Mary, Queen of Scots’ House in the town’s Queen Street.

It is anticipated that work on the information centre will be competed by March 28.
