JEDBURGH’S Millie Green has won a top accolade in a national awards for learners competition.

The Borders College student was named as runner-up in the agriculture category of Lantra’s tenth national Land-based and Aquaculture Learner of the Year Awards in Perth last week.

Millie, who is studying for an SVQ2 in agriculture, said: “I really love working in agriculture, especially working with livestock. I have always had animals around me and it seemed natural to come and study at college.”

The awards recognise the achievements and success of learners in the land-based and environmental sector across Scotland and judges said the standard of entries was particularly high this year.

Winners and runners up from 15 categories, plus an overall winner and runner up, were named at a ceremony at the Crieff Hydro Hotel last Thursday when Millie was pipped at the post by another agriculture student, Finlay Ross from Perthshire.

Millie’s tutor Andrew Johnson said: “Millie is extremely hard working and excels in working with livestock. She is always happy to volunteer for tasks, she has also been also been elected class representative.

“She coped really well and is getting on in a male dominated industry. She is driven and determined to succeed and will be a great asset to any business.”
