NHS Borders will review an incident which saw a man involved in a three-hour stand-off with police in Galashiels Health Centre, writes Kenny Paterson.

The man is alleged to have entered the centre, poured a liquid over himself and threatened to self harm last Thursday afternoon.

It led to the evacuation of all 30 staff as well as patients from the Currie Road facility, as emergency services attended.

The building was closed for the remainder of the day, as was the nearby Asda store car park and petrol forecourt.

The incident eventually passing off peacefully at 5.30pm. A spokeswoman for NHS Borders said it was comfortable with its security arrangements across its health centres.

She praised Asda for providing support for its staff, such as hot beverages, as well as the emergency services for their quick response.

The spokeswoman added that anyone whose appointment had to be cancelled should contact the health centre to reschedule. On Friday, John McCarry, 49, appeared in private on petition from custody at Jedburgh Sheriff Court facing a charge of breach of the peace.

McCarry of Gorse Lane, Galashiels, made no plea or declaration and the case was continued for further examination.

He was remanded in custody by Sheriff Derrick McIntyre pending the next court hearing.
