Galashiels teenager Dylan Howel is almost halfway towards his £5,400 Chilean adventure target.

The 17-year-old has now raised £2,000 thanks to a successful band night in the Mission Hall in Galashiels last month.

Music came from local bands The Shreddies and The Weight, followed by a DJ set from Eddie Fell and Matthew Croan.

Dylan said: “It was an excellent night and very successful in both money raised and the enjoyment everyone had.

“Big thanks to Chris Wemyss from Sound Out and everyone else who helped make the event.”

Dylan’s next fundraiser is a ceilidh at Smailholm village hall on Saturday, March 9.

Doors open at 7.30pm and tickets are £10, which includes stovies.

People can get tickets from Dylan (075467 63172), Effie Denholm (01573 460622) and Tartan & Tweed in Galashiels.

People can continue to donate via uk.virginmoneygiving.com/DylanChileAdventure, with further information available by emailing dylanhowel@googlemail.com.

Dylan is raising cash to go to Chile to teach English for a year at a comprehensive school in the South American country.

The 12-month placement follows a selection process through the Project Trust.

Dylan told us in November: “I was selected and the spent a week on the Isle of Coll in the Hebrides learning new skills.

“I will be living with a host family for a year while in Chile, so will be in amongst the community.

“I am really keen on travelling, so felt this was a great opportunity.

“I plan to go to university after Chile and then probably get a job, so I cannot see myself getting a chance like this again.”
