STOW farmer Nigel Miller has been returned unopposed as president of the National Farmers Union of Scotland.

No other candidates stood and this week’s AGM saw the livestock producer proposed and seconded to serve a second two-year term in the top post.

The Borders is further represented as former livestock committee chairman, Rob Livesey of Firth, Lilliesleaf steps up unopposed into the role of vice president.

And Fife arable farmer Allan Bowie, who has been vice president since February 2009, will continue.

Mr Miller said: “NFU Scotland remains a lead organisation in Scottish agriculture because of the time and effort that those who hold office – whether at branch,

region or national level – are prepared to put aside for their fellow farmers.

“This board takes up office at a hugely important time for the industry with the CAP Reform process and independence debate gathering momentum. In addition, every sector of our farming industry faces a growing list of challenges.”

This year would also be one of celebrations he said as the union marks its centenary year.
