ST BOSWELLS

AT St Boswells Mart on Monday John Swan Ltd sold 93 clean cattle, 67 OTM cattle, 1,971 old season lambs and 504 ewes.

Bullocks (41) averaged 212p per kg and sold to 242p (-0.3p on week), heifers (50) averaged 219.4p per kg and sold to 241p (+4.2p on week), two young bulls averaged 200.9p per kg and sold to 223p (n/c on week) and 67 beef type OTM cattle averaged 141.9p per kg and sold to 177p (+3.8p on the week).

The 1,971 old season lambs averaged 151.1p per kg and sold to £77 (-6.2p on week) including 1061 38-42kgs averaging 156.1p. 504 ewes averaged £44.15 and sold to £109.

AT their weekly Primestock Sale held at Wooler last Wednesday John Swan Ltd had forward and sold 749 hoggs and 109 ewes.

Weather conditions again playing a part but all classes dearer on the week, In spec lambs receiving premium rewards.

LONGTOWN

THE Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart PL. had forward 33 prime cattle, two young bulls, 32 over 30 month cattle, 5,379 prime hoggs and 4,940 cast ewes and rams at their weekly sale at Longtown last Thursday. A small show of prime cattle and a shortage of quality saw the trade sharper on the week. Top price to 223.5p, twice, firstly for a Limousin bullock shown by J.C. and D. Nicholson and Son, The Gill, then for a Limousin heifer from J. and N. Blaylock and Son, Hallburn.

A small show of prime bulls sold to a top of 203.5p for British Blue from Becton Hall.

More Black and White cows on offer saw the trade up on the week, particularly plain cows. The sale topped at 207.5p and 204.5p for Limousins from Messrs J. Magnay, Smallholms.

Another fine show of 5,379 prime hoggs were presented to the usual ring of buyers. The sale average was 156.4p per kilo, similar on the week. Export hoggs easy to sell with best quality Beltex and Texels regularly between 220p and 270p. Heavy hoggs sharper with less about and lightweight hoggs well sold with flesh, others little more than store price. More top quality hoggs required to satisfy buyers demand. Top was £96.50 for Texels from Backhill and to 271p per kilo for Beltex hoggs from Walton Woodhead and High Greenhill.

A lesser show of 4,940 ewes were forward to the usual ring of buyers with best Texel and Continental ewes easy to sell, heavy ewes short in numbers, Mule ewes similar on the week but Blackface and Cheviot ewes with flesh £2-£3 sharper on the week.

BORDER LIVESTOCK

DURING last week Border Livestock Exchange Ltd sold 131 prime cattle including 50 cows, 1,688 prime lambs and 365 cast ewes.

Organic heifers sold to 435p per kg and £1,540 Cresswell Farms. Aberdeen Angus cross steers and heifers hit the top prices this week with Eastfield of Lempitlaw, Kelso, selling to 405p per kg with both Fenwick Steads, Belford, and West Kyloe, Beal, selling to 400p per kg and £1,541. Charolais crosses sold to 367p per kg for heifers from Easington Grange, Belford, and Primside, Yetholm. Limousin cross steers and heifers from Shidlaw, Cornhill, sold to 371p per kg. Cull cows to 280p per kg and £1,563 Bowsden Moor, Berwick.

Prime lambs continued to firm with numbers held back due to the weather. Top prices were 350p per kg and £73.50 for Texel cross export weights from Roddam Home Farm, Wooler. Texel and Suffolk also to 345p per kg and £72.45 from The Hardens and Thorneydykes, Duns. Romney’s to 335p per kg Humbleton, Wooler. Organic lambs sold to 370p per kg Tullochallum, Keith.

Texel ewes to £98.50 Blackadder Mains, Duns; Lleyn to £67.50 Tughall Farm, Chathill; Blackfaced to £50.50.
