Tweed Bridge shut again

THE Old Tweed Bridge is once again closed to pedestrians and cyclists, writes Kenny Paterson.

The 19th century crossing had been reopened when new fencing was installed as part of Transport Scotland’s ongoing scheme to fix the masonry structure.

But the cold weather that has hit the country is being blamed for further deterioration of the B-listed bridge between Lindean and Boleside, which is not used by vehicles.

Ian Stewart of BEAR Scotland, which is carrying out the work on behalf of Transport Scotland, said: “Access across the bridge has been temporarily closed due to deterioration of the bridge over the recent period of adverse weather.

“It is hoped to reinstate the temporary pedestrian and cycle access in the near future after temporary propping works.

“Ongoing liaison with Scottish Borders Council and relevant parties will ensure the works will be carried out as quickly as possible while preserving this listed structure.”

Previously, Transport Scotland and SBC were in a long-running dispute regarding who should take responsibility for repairing the crumbling crossing. And in October, Selkirkshire councillor Gordon Edgar appealed for the bridge to be fixed in time for this year’s Selkirk Rally in September.

A Transport Scotland spokesperson said after the bridge has been renovated and preserved, the main refurbishment works will take place later this year, resulting in the route being temporarily closed again.
