ANOTHER national firm has pulled out of Galashiels town centre, after DVD and computer games rental firm Blockbuster plunged into administration last week, writes Kenny Paterson.

The Bank Street premises was one of 23 Scottish shops which is to close, with 100 workers in total losing their jobs.

This week, huge discount sales posters were placed across the store’s windows as administrators tried to claw back some cash from its assets.

Lee Manning of accountancy firm Deloitte, which is running Blockbuster, said: “Having reviewed the portfolio with management, the store closure plan is an inevitable consequence of having to restructure the company to a profitable core which is capable of being sold.

“We would like to thank the company’s employees for their support and professionalism during this difficult time.

“We are also grateful to the customers for their continued support.”

A Deloitte spokesman added: “Stores will remain open for business as usual and customers will be notified in advance of closure so that they can return their outstanding rental items beforehand.

“The standard terms and conditions remain in place during this time.”

The loss of Blockbuster follows the demise of Comet – which had a large store at Hunters Bridge retail park in Galashiels – in December, after the electricals firm also went into administration.
