Kelso Music Society has announced the return of pianist Anna Tilbrook (top of page) for a concert at Kelso High School on Sunday, February 3, at 2.30pm, where she will perform with one of the world’s leading light tenors, James Gilchrist, right, and the Puertas String Quartet, left.
Together James and Anna have recorded a CD of Vaughan William’s haunting On Wenlock Edge, which they will perform on the night, and they have also produced critically acclaimed recordings of the Schubert song cycles.
The programme catches the spirit of England before and just after the First World War.
On Wenlock Edge is Vaughan Williams’ settings of Houseman’s beautifully nostalgic poems about rural life in Edwardian England.
James and Anna will also sing songs by Quilter, Vaughan Williams, Warlock, Gurney and Frank Bridge, all written just after the Great War.
One half of the programme is devoted to Elgar’s great piano quintet, first performed in 1922, and one of the composer’s greatest achievements.
