ELEVEN schools have been closed and one of the Borders’ main roads has shut as heavy snow, gale-force winds and freezing temperatures batter the region.

The snow is expected to fall over the area until tomorrow and Scottish Borders Council say its emergency bunker at its Newtown headquarters is in operation.

All school transport was cancelled last night with schools making the decision to remain open or close.

Those to close completely are: Eddleston, Newlands, Walkerburn, Morebattle, Gordon, Westruther, Yarrow, Swinton, Eccles/Leitholm, Chirnside and Heriot.

The resilient schools scheme was activated last night meaning teachers are allocated to a school within walking distance.

A number of nurseries and support centres were shut due to the conditions, while social work services which closed include Ability Centre in Galashiels and Cheviot Day Service in Kelso.

Council gritting teams have been out in full force since 6am but there have still been a number of accidents this morning including a car that left the road on the A699 near Selkirk and another incident near Borders General Hospital.

The A68 at Carter Bar is shut, as is the A697 between Greenlaw and Wark in Northumberland.

Keep checking TheSouthern for updates on weather conditions, road and service closures.
