A GALASHIELS student has shaved her head to raise money for a soldiers’ charity.
Business studies student Amy Brown cut her shoulder length hair at Borders College last Wednesday to raise more than £740 for the services’ charity Help for Heroes.
Amy, 19, of Balmoral Avenue said: “It’s the first time I’ve raised money for them, I would like to do more.” She has a personal reason for wanting to help the charity – three years ago her brother, Craig, who is a member of 1Scots, was treated for a brain tumour and was in a coma when Help For Heroes paid for mum, Margaret, to travel down and visit him at a specialist hospital in Birmingham, paying for travel and accommodation.
The infantryman and physical training instructor had collapsed when serving in Iraq, which medics put down to sunstroke. But after it happened again in Afghanistan, the soldier was found to have a brain tumour which was removed.
Amy said: “He has recovered remarkably well and is back to his old self again.
“He makes me proud every single day. Help for Heroes means so much because they have done a lot for me and other families. It’s my favourite charity.”
And her mum’s reaction to the extreme fundraising haircut?
Any said: “She’s very proud of me and behind me 100 per cent.”
The student expects the total she raises to be boosted as further money came in this week.
