TWO mums have joined the council’s education committee to represent the voice of parents, writes Bob Burgess.

Alison Ramcharran will represent primary school parents, while Kate Foreman will represent the views of parents with pupils at secondary schools.

Kate is a GP in Selkirk but lives in Peebles where she has two children at the high school.

Alison moved to the Coldingham area from London with her husband and two boys in March 2009 and chairs the parents’ association at Coldingham primary school. Both were elected during a ballot of parents councils across the Borders last month.

Kate commented: “This is an important time in Scottish education with the introduction of the Curriculum for Excellence and it is important to have the views of parents represented.”

Alison added: “My parents impressed upon me the importance of education, but it was not until I became a parent that the reality of this hit me. Inviting parent representatives to participate is a good decision.”

The duo can’t vote but education chairman Councillor Sandy Aitchison told us: “Their contribution to the strategic planning of education will be very valuable and help ensure the robustness and independence of the committee.”
