BORDER LIVESTOCK

DURING the week ending January 6, Border Livestock Exchange Ltd sold 127 prime cattle, including 48 cast cows and bulls, and 2,097 prime lambs and 129 ewes.

The year got off to a good start with prime cattle selling to 360p per kg for Aberdeen Angus heifers from Bonjedward Mill, Jedburgh, to Well Hung and Tender, Berwick. Continental steers sold to 345p per kg and £1,458 West Kyloe, Beal (11 averaging £1,242); Limousins 344p and £1,434 (six averaging £1,247) Shipley, Alnwick.

Cows were short of requirements and consequently dear with Simmentals and Belgian Blues to 285p and £1,313 and £1,178 Quixwood, Duns; 275p Outerston, Gorebridge and 270p Tughall Grange, Seahouses and Fawdon, Alnwick.

Lambs were again good to sell with organics selling to 490p per kg Tullochallum, Keith. Export weight lambs to £465p and £97.50 Roddam Estates, Wooler, and £94.50 The Hardens, Duns, and Deanfoot, Hawick.

Heavy lambs sold to £120 per head Broadmeadows, Berwick.

LONGTOWN

Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart PLC had forward 48 prime cattle, six young bulls, 20 over-30 month cattle, 3,365 prime hoggs and 5,197 cast ewes and rams at their weekly sale at Longtown last Thursday.

A larger show of prime cattle maintained a brisk trade and plenty of cattle still breaking the £2 barrier.

Top price of 219.5p for a Limousin bullock from M. and G.A. Nicholson, The Lake, purchased by W. Kirkup and Sons, Butchers, Longtown, others 215.5p from A. and W.J. Taylor and Son, Dashwellgreen. Limousin heifers sold to 214.5p from J. and N. Blaylock and Son, Hallburn. Charolais heifers peaked at 209.5p from J. and D. Longlands Ltd., Tone Hall.

Bulls met a great trade, still more required to fill the buyers order books.

Top of 188.5p for a Limousin from T. and M. Irving, Becton Hall.

A small show of OTM’s saw trade remain good to sell, topping at 198.5p for a Limousin from Messrs J. Stalker, Ratten Castle, with Black and Whites to 139.5p from G. and A. Lockhart, Underwood House.

A smaller show of 3,365 prime hoggs was forward due to inclement weather on Wednesday making sorting impossible.

The usual ring of buyers still required sheep although only at a price.

The 663 lightweight hoggs continued to sell at recent high rates. Another good show of 5,197 cast ewes and rams were forward to the usual ring of buyers with all classes again £5 to £6 dearer on the week as it becomes increasingly evident that cast ewes are beginning to become scarcer nationwide.

ST BOSWELLS

AT St Boswells Mart on Monday, John Swan Ltd sold 113 clean cattle, 130 OTM cattle, 3,458 old season lambs and 848 ewes.

Bullocks (46) averaged 200p per kg (-1.3p on the week). Heifers (64) averaged 203p per kg (-2.5p on the week).

Three young bulls averaged 186p per kg (n/c on the week). 126 beef type OTM cattle averaged 135.8p per kg (-5.4p on the week).

Four dairy type OTM cattle averaged 126.3p per kg (n/c on the week).

The 3,458 old season lambs averaged 204.3p per kg (+1p on the week) including 2,082 36-42kgs averaging 211.2p, 465 light lambs averaged 196.9p. 848 ewes averaged £83.67 (n/c on the week).

AT their weekly Primestock Sale held at Wooler last Wednesday John Swan Ltd had forward and sold 703 hoggs and 251 ewes.

Hoggs:- Overall average 43.8kg at 197p – 39-42kg – 211.6p.

Handy weighted hoggs again easily sold but out of spec sorts harder to sell. Averages dearer on the week.
