THE number of children on the Child Protection Register in the Borders is below the national average, according to a report just released.

There are currently 34 on the register. The national average is 2.8 per 1,000 aged 15 and under, while the rate in the Borders is 1.7.

Almost 60 per cent are aged four or under and the length of time spent on the register has fallen from 41 weeks in 2009-10 to what social workers say is a relatively low time of 32 weeks.

The details are contained in the annual report of Andrew Lowe, the director of social work with Scottish Borders Council.
